SHAPES OF IMAGINATION
Artist Statement
Within this body of work, I am investigating how line, shape, and color have endless possibilities when combined and manipulated. I am merging multiple individually drawn panels that I sketch at random into a bigger, new picture. Next, I use my own set of rules and intuitions to color and further push the design into a finished artwork.
The process behind this body of work represents the evolution of myself as an artist during my academic time at SCAD. None of this process would have occurred without my peers and teacher’s suggestions and lessons. As a sophomore, I began to always carry around a small bound sketchbook and a pen to doodle with everywhere I went. In my junior year, I began taking pictures of my doodles and turning them into patterns digitally. Finally, in senior year abstract class, we were asked to create shaped substrates and paint on them. So, my doodles turned into cut-out shapes that could hang on the wall. However, it wasn’t until later that I thought to combine the shapes and the designed patterns into larger-scale works.
This work is important to me not only because it signifies the culmination of my academic journey at SCAD but also because it represents my growth as an artist throughout this time. This series stands as a testament to my artistic evolution, inviting viewers to engage with the dynamic interplay of elements and witness the progression of my creative process.
